RomaniaAllavida currently has a number of projects in operation in Romania. CBO Development Programme We are currently running a Community-Based Organisation Development Programme in Romania, entitled "Learning, Participation, Trust". The programme is partly funded by the CS Mott Foundation and hosted by the Romanian Association for Community Development. The Programme aims to strengthen the capacity of community-based organisations (CBOs) working with and for marginalised people to make a direct impact on the social and economic needs of their local communities. By CBOs we mean both registered non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and informal non-registered community groups working on community development initiatives. The programme consists of three basic components:
May 2004 - Allavida has produced a series of short reports on some of the projects which were implemented with the micro-grants. Click here to download the report (PDF, 648k) In the current year (2003-04), the programme is being implemented in south-west Romania (judets of Mehedinti, Gorj, Dolj and Valcea). Eighteen organisations are participating, seven of which are registered NGOs and 11 are informal community groups. We hope that a new cycle of the programme will begin in spring 2004. We are currently raising funds to provide the small grants for participating groups: you can support us by sponsoring some friends of Allavida in a tandem ride to Paris. Further information can be obtained from Roxana Mirciu, Programme Coordinator, or Madalina Ionescu, Programme Assistant, or call the Coordination Office in Bucharest on 021-3139535 or 0744 692046. Local Philanthropy Research The Association for Community Relations (Asociatia pentru Relatii Comunitara – ARC) was established in 2001 and specialises in research and activities which promote local philanthropy in Romania. Allavida has been working with those involved in ARC since before its establishment and advised on setting the organisation up. Allavida believes that ARC has the potential to become one of the leading NGOs in the sector and it is already gaining a reputation for excellence inside and outside Romania. Allavida has been working with ARC to research the extent and characteristics of indigenous philanthropy in Romania. The research focuses on public and corporate donations; opinion polls and a series of interviews with businesses and NGOs were conducted. The recently-published study has three versions, each addressing different target audiences, including a full report, with case-studies.
The brochure highlights relevant data from the study and plays the role of an executive summary addressing those that need some basic information about the donations made in Romania. The brochure is available to download in pdf format.
The complete version of the study addresses NGOs in particular, but will also be of interest to public authorities and institutional donors wishing to strengthen fundraising activities among NGOs. The study analyzes philanthropic behaviour of both individuals and businesses, and considers the extent of giving, donation strategies, the motivation for making a donation and the potential for future donations. It includes a section with several case studies on fundraising methods, giving examples of NGOs which have developed fundraising actions in their communities. This section identifies the challenges in fundraising, analyzes the reasons for the success or failure of these attempts and offers approaches that increase the chance of success. A hard copy or PDF of the full report, in English, can be ordered from Allavida. The hard copy costs £8.00, plus £3.50 postage and packing; the PDF version costs £5.00. Download an order form. Romanian Association for Community Development We are working with the Romanian Association for Community Development (Asociatia Romana de Dezvoltare Comunitara - ARDC) to develop their organisational and institutional capacities and to introduce a seed-funding element to their current activities. ARDC is the leading community development NGO in Romania and provides a range of services to communities across Romania. Recent Research In 2001, Allavida completed two research projects in Romania. The 2001 Review of the Romanian NGO Sector: Copies of the Executive Summary and Final Report in English and Romanian are available to download below. This review highlights a number of successes and failures in programmes targeting the NGO sector as a whole from 1990 to 2000 and includes detailed profiles of major donors. The review was carried out in association with the Romanian Donors' Forum (RDF), an informal network of Romanian and foreign grant-making organisations which actively support the development of civil society in Romania. Jon Edwards, who manages Allavida's programme in Romania, currently sits on the Steering Group of the RDF. Download the Donor Review in PDF format or the Executive Summary in Word (2000). |
